The Dorthiea Price Memorial Scholarship
Established to help adult learners overcome barriers to earning their GED and continuing their educational journey. Created in loving memory of Dorthiea Price by her eldest daughter, Debbie Wright, the scholarship reflects Dorthiea's lifelong belief that education changes lives. Scholarship funds may be used to assist eligible students with GED testing fees, educational materials, transportation assistance, and other approved expenses that support educational success. At Charlotte Learning Center, we understand that many adult learners face challenges beyond the classroom.
The Dorthiea Price Memorial Scholarship exists to help remove those obstacles so that students can focus on achieving their goals and building brighter futures. Through this scholarship, Dorthiea's legacy of encouragement, service, and belief in the power of literacy continues to impact lives for generations to come.
About Dorthiea Price
The Charlotte Learning Center family remembers Dorthiea not only for her years of service, but for the lives she touched, the hope she inspired, and the light she brought to others. Her story continues in every learner who discovers the power of reading.
Born in California on March 26, 1940, Dorthiea Price spent part of her childhood traveling the rails with her family, living in a train car as her father worked as a welder on the railroad. Those early journeys across the country reflected the spirit that would define her life — always moving forward, always learning, and always growing.
Eventually, she made her way east and settled in Phenix, Virginia, where she built a life rooted in family, community, and service. After the passing of her beloved husband, Kyle “Buddy” Price, Dorthiea found renewed purpose in helping others. She dedicated the next 26 years of her life to Charlotte Learning Center as a volunteer tutor and board member, becoming a cherished part of the organization's mission and family.
Her service extended far beyond literacy education. Dorthiea volunteered as an EMT, served as a photographer for the Union Star, and enjoyed gardening, puzzles, crafts, and storytelling. Yet throughout every chapter of her life, one passion remained constant: helping others succeed.
As a tutor, Dorthiea patiently guided countless adults on their literacy journeys. Through her encouragement, compassion, and unwavering belief in their potential, she helped learners gain the skills and confidence needed to transform their lives. For many students, learning to read opened doors to employment, independence, personal achievement, and new opportunities for their families.
Her legacy lives on in every learner who gains confidence through education, every GED earned, and every goal achieved through the power of literacy.
